The 'bad boy' of the Adelaide food scene.
A chef father, Portugese and Italian godparents, a music addiction and the cultural melting-pot that is South African society are the foundation of Welgemoed’s cooking ethos.
He sharpened his craft as a chef in the UK under executive chef Michael North at The Goose at Britwell Salome, who achieved a Michelin star during Welgemoed’s time there. Next stop was Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons – a competitive kitchen committed to excellence and doused in Michelin stars.
Relocating to Adelaide, Welgemoed was one of the founders of the acclaimed Bistro Dom, assuming the role of executive chef. Bistro Dom was subsequently named The Australian’s Hottest Restaurant in South Australia, a listing in Gourmet Traveller’s Top 100 and Welgemoed crowned The Advertiser’s Chef of the Year (2013).
In 2014 Welgemoed branched out on his own and opened Africola in November that year – it was a quirky, garish eatery and an ode to his South African heritage that harnessed his hallmark bold and unapologetic cooking style. Today Africola is laced with North African influences, showing that Welgemoed is adventurous, curious and always evolving.
Accolades continue to flood in and Africola has become a staple for national and international visitors, high profile music and film guests, industry legends and Adelaide foodies.
