Yalumba's winemaker of 20 years
A particular focus for Louisa is the developmental work at Yalumba with Viognier, and the creation of ‘The Virgilius’ Viognier – Yalumba’s pre-eminent white wine. Widely regarded as a leader within the industry, Louisa receives widespread recognition for her work with the variety.
During her 20-year career at Yalumba, Louisa Rose has become one of the world’s most respected winemakers – forging an identity for Australian Viognier, challenging perceptions of Barossa Shiraz, leading her viti- and vinicultural teams to ever greater heights and giving up her nights, weekends and spare moments for the betterment of Australian wine.
Louisa Rose is one of Australia's most experienced and talented winemakers. Put simply, she’s a rock star.
Louisa, Chief Winemaker since 2006, wears many hats at Yalumba; award winner, wine judge, board member, natural leader. Louisa is an inspiring figure in Australia’s wine industry and a proud ambassador for Yalumba’s own brand of progressive winemaking.
Her name is synonymous with Viognier in Australia; in 2014 The Age named Lou Australia’s Best Winemaker, in 2008 she received the coveted Gourmet Traveller WINE Winemaker of the Year award and in 2004 the International Wine & Spirit Competition named her the winner of the Women in Wine award.
Lou’s heavily involved in judging at Australian and international wine shows and is an active member of Barossa winemaking fraternity The Barons of Barossa. And, because she’s not busy enough, Lou is a Director of the Australian Wine Research Institute, the co-chair of the South Australian Wine Industry Council - an advisory group to the South Australian Government - and is a member of the South Australian Agribusiness Council.
Lou is the custodian of both Yalumba tradition and innovation at the winery. It's a big task but one she has been groomed for since her first vintage at Yalumba in 1992. Her gifts as a taster and winemaker have been on display ever since.
