Overview

Ah, 2020. It wasn’t the year anyone expected – but at least its riesling was exceptional. This masterclass unites leading Australian winemakers with 2020 rieslings most definitely worth sharing. You’ll tour the Clare and Eden valleys, south-west Victoria and Tasmania, comparing approaches to a varietal known for attracting afficionados.

Louisa Rose has become one of the world’s most respected winemakers during her 20-year career at Yalumba. She is especially noted for her white wines, with riesling – including those she makes from the historic Pewsey Vale estate – holding special significance.

Cool-climate specialist Anna Pooley believes wine is about community. As a child she loved sharing her family’s first harvest, an experience that sparked an ongoing fascination with winemaking. Pooley worked for Australian powerhouses including Wolf Blass, Penfolds and Rosemount, was named Australian Young Winemaker of the Year by Wine Society in 2010 and since 2013 has been based at her family label Pooley Wines.

Rieslingfreak winemaker John Hughes lives and breathes his favourite grape. A childhood in the Clare Valley laid the foundation; the launch of his own label in 2009 followed studies in business and a decade spent working at the Australian Wine Research Institute. Enamoured with riesling’s many iterations, Hughes produces a range of 12 separate lines, among them a sparkling sekt, fortified riesling and distinguished aged releases. He was a Gourmet Traveller 2021 Winemaker of the Year finalist.

Fiona Thomson will come to Tasting Australia from her family’s Crawford River vineyard in the Henty region of south-west Victoria. It was established in 1975 – breaking new ground in a district better known for dairy, wool and beef farming – and has since gone on to produce outstanding wines, with rieslings a particular standout.
