Dreaming of a desert escape? Here it is. Tasting Australia Airlines is off to Coober Pedy for a new overnight adventure. Discover the rugged beauty of an iconic South Australian destination known best for the glittering opals its red soil yields. This is true bucket list travel.

Your journey will begin at 12pm Saturday with a two-hour flight north from Adelaide. Expect bubbles and delicious snacks on board – then prepare to touch down in another world. Casual elegance rules: the flavours of this frontier community will be captured by chefs Ben Shewry (Melbourne’s lauded Attica) and Duncan Welgemoed (Adelaide hotspot Africola).

Former AFL player turned indigenous food entrepreneur Daniel Motlop and South Australian Museum head of humanities Professor John Carty will also join the journey, sharing knowledge of this remarkable place.

Expect an epic Tasting Australia takeover for Saturday’s dinner as Shewry and Welgemoed get to work inside the Big Winch Café. The pair excel in creating flavour-driven dishes guided by classic technique but always of the moment. Their bespoke menu for this occasion is sure to be special.

Both above ground and underground accommodation – for the full Coober Pedy experience – is available.

Underground accommodation at Lookout Cave Motel (Motel Rooms).
Above ground accommodation at Desert Cave Hotel.

The journey’s second day will feature the Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park, where folds of ochre earth meet the wide blue sky. Guests have the option to see the sun rise ahead of lunch in the underground Serbian Orthodox Church Hall – a unique venue befitting the one-off experience it will host.

Guests will return to Adelaide at 5pm Sunday.
