South Australian food heroes celebrated as Salopian crowned best

The Salopian Inn and Tasting Australia programming director Jock Zonfrillo have been named South Australia’s best restaurant and chef respectively at The Advertiser Food Awards for 2018.

The regional gem and Adelaide’s most prolific chef lead an esteemed list of Food Award winners – some well-established and others that are emerging talents – that were announced at The Advertiser on Monday 12 November.

Along with Restaurant of the Year, Karena Armstrong’s McLaren Vale eatery The Salopian Inn was also named Best Regional Restaurant (independent). The Salopian Inn hosted one of Tasting Australia’s most-loved and sold-out events of the 2018 program, Garden to Plate.

Zonfrillo, whose Restaurant Orana continues to accrue industry acclaim was recognised for another stellar year progressing South Australia’s food story as TAFE SA Chef of the Year. Last month Restaurant Orana was named Good Food Guide Restaurant of the Year for 2018.

The evening was a wonderful celebration of the breadth of the local industry, with restaurants in different regions, cuisines and sizes recognised for excellence.

Best New Restaurant was awarded to the D’Arenberg Cube, which has attracted significant interest as a progressive restaurant and premium tourism destination in less than 12 months.

The title of Best Cheap Eats went to La Popular Taqueria which was a huge hit with their inaugural pop-up activation in Town Square this year, but reside permanently at Port Adelaide offering authentic Mexican food and stories. Also at the Port, the Admiral was named Best Hotel.
