Daniella – born in Mexico City – migrated with her husband to Australia in 2009. Her original profession in Mexico was marine biology and her last job before making the move was Director of the Puerto Morelos Marine Park in the Yucatan Peninsula.

After migrating to Townsville, Daniella decided to pursue her passion, traditional Mexican cuisine. This needed to wait a little bit longer, as she continued working as a biologist in the Great Barrier Reef. In 2012 a new job opportunity landed them in Adelaide.

In search of a good Mexican food she realized how poorly Mexico was represented in the Adelaide food scene and decided to change careers and share her passion by doing pop-up dinners in her home under the banner of Mi Mero Mole. She did this for about 5 years, creating a loyal following.

In 2017, with the help of Renew Adelaide she opened La Popular Taqueria and has been serving traditional Mexican ever since. In this small restaurant tortillas are made by hand, salsas the way they should and tacos are served the way Mexicans like them. The name of the restaurant reflects the specialty of the house, tacos, and is an ode to her neighbourhood of Sector Popular in Mexico City.

In 2021 La Popular Taqueria won the Eat Easy award for Australia’s Best Dining, a public vote award that rewards places on basis of food quality, service, atmosphere and sustainability regardless of price.
