Daniella Guevara, originally from Mexico City, relocated to Australia in 2009 with her husband. Her initial career in Mexico was centred on marine biology, and her last position before the move was serving as the director of the Puerto Morelos Marine Park on the Yucatan Peninsula.
After migrating to Townsville, Guevara pursued her passion for traditional Mexican cuisine, which had been temporarily deferred while she continued her work as a biologist on the Great Barrier Reef. In 2012, a new job opportunity prompted a move to Adelaide.
In search of good Mexican food, she realised how poorly her homeland was represented in the Adelaide food scene and decided to change careers and share her passion by hosting pop-up dinners in her home under the name of Mi Mero Mole. Guevara continued this endeavour for approximately five years, amassing a dedicated following along the way.
In 2017, with the support of Renew Adelaide, she established La Popular Taqueria in Port Adelaide. The restaurant’s name pays homage to its specialty, tacos, and is a nod to her Mexico City neighbourhood of Sector Popular.
In 2021, La Popular Taqueria was honoured with the Eat Easy award for Australia's best dining. This prestigious accolade, determined by public vote, recognises establishments for their food quality, service, atmosphere and sustainability, irrespective of price.
