Karena Armstrong’s work is recognised far and wide. Her flagship, The Salopian Inn in
McLaren Vale, South Australia, co-owned with Alex Marchetti, is considered a jewel in the
crown of regional dining in Adelaide’s south.
As a chef, Karena brings a global outlook to an ever-evolving seasonal menu that celebrates
eclectic flavours and timeless techniques. Rooted in her kitchen garden and realised with her
talented team at the Salopian Inn, her food reflects both creativity and respect for produce.
A busy mother of three teenage boys, Karena has worked alongside some of Australia’s most
celebrated chefs. She completed her apprenticeship under Alla Wolf Tasker at
Daylesford’s Lake House, teamed up with Karen Martini at The Melbourne Wine Room, and
honed her skills further at Icebergs before joining Kylie Kwong at Billy Kwong.
Her skills are sharp, her creativity unbridled, and her passion for high-quality, local produce
shines through every dish she creates.
Beyond the kitchen, Karena served a four-year tenure as Festival Director of Tasting
Australia, where she curated one of the country’s most exciting food festivals — a career
highlight that allowed her to champion South Australia’s abundance of produce and talent on
a grand stage.
Karena also contributes as a judge for the Delicious. Produce Awards, giving her a national
platform to advocate for South Australia’s finest and most ethical producers.
