The Austrian Club in Adelaide had very humble beginnings some seventy years ago when a number of Austrians decided to establish a club here in South Australia.
They decided to have a meeting for those interested in joining such a club and organized a dance evening. Approximately 30 to 40 people, most of them single, decided to attend. Today, after seventy years of club existence, we now have an established history that we can speak of. The first steps were tough, but untiring work and the undeterred will to succeed, along with a strong sense of community, formed the path of the Austrian Club leading up to the present day. Through their tolerance, willingness to work hard, respectability (and not least through their tradition of music and dance and food) Austrian-Australians have played an important role in working towards building a better life and a better Australia. They have also succeeded in encouraging the up-coming generation to continue to preserve the cultural heritage of their forefathers and to embrace it, at least, as their own heritage.
