Ben began his career in the wine industry 25 years ago as a viticulturist in McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills, after completing his degree in Viticulture at the University of Adelaide. Firmly holding the view that winemaking is one dynamic and perpetual process rather than two separate disciplines, Ben returned to Adelaide University in 2004 to complete his Oenology degree, before moving in to various winemaking and consulting roles in Australia (Mitchelton, Yering Station, Mount Langi Ghiran) and abroad. In 2009, Ben launched Ben Haines Wine as a vehicle for expressing his creative approach to grape growing and winemaking, and to pursue his vision with ultimate freedom. In 2018, Ben settled in the Yarra Valley where he established a small winery and ran several small vineyards. Last year, Ben returned home to SA with his young family, purchasing a property in Ashton in the Piccadilly Valley, Adelaide Hills where he is establishing a small winery and planning the development of his organic vineyard. Ben is also studying for his Masters of Wine in between drinks.
