All journeys have a story. Those shared on this remarkable passage will explore connection and belonging, heritage and love. Tasting Australia returns to rail with members of the Ayubi family behind seminal Adelaide restaurant Parwana and Dungan Welgemoed from instant classic Africola. Be entranced.
Step aboard The Ghan’s dining and bar carriages as they are coupled to The Overland for a 10-hour gastronomic adventure from Melbourne to Adelaide replete with curated experiences. Memorable food and beverages are certain, served amid the meditation of passing landscapes.
Fatema Ayubi and her brother-in-law Sayed Ayaz Asna star at Parwana Afghan Kitchen in Torrensville, adored for its warm hospitality and traditional cuisine. The restaurant – favourite of neighbours and the New York Times alike – offers a bridge to history in a style still of the moment.
Welgemoed, meanwhile, launched the city-centre Africola to immediate acclaim. It features the vibrant flavours of his South African homeland in seasonal menus made to be shared. Now, in a Tasting Australia exclusive, he’s taking it to the tracks.
Journalist, wine writer and author Katie Spain will host the fun in her signature effervescent style. Enjoy a Parwana breakfast, followed by a masterclass led by sommelier Stacey-Lee Edwards set to feature wine from regions traversed during the journey.
Settle in for a long lunch shaped by Welgemoed, finishing with afternoon cocktails from Fleurieu Peninsula distillery Never Never on approach to Adelaide.
The timeless romance of train travel is reprised through this offering, one proudly shaped with the festival’s new presenting partner Journey Beyond – operator of Australia’s most iconic travel experience.
