Praeter is the project of Matt Large, a winemaker who’s been quietly building one of the most compelling stories in Australian wine. After years of shaping wines as Senior Winemaker for Shaw + Smith and honing his craft over many vintages in Barolo and Barbaresco, Matt has now made Praeter his full-time focus.
Founded in 2018 as an outlet for his deep passion for Nebbiolo, Praeter is entering a new chapter. As of late 2024, Matt has stepped into hands-on vineyard management, marking the first time he’ll be growing fruit specifically for the Praeter label. With this shift comes a broader exploration—alongside Nebbiolo, premium single-site Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are now part of the offering, and a focus on farming and fruit quality marks exciting things on Praeter’s horizon.
