In a wine mecca like South Australia there are always new stars to know. Oenology grads forging bold paths across celebrated regions. Career changers who turn side projects into day jobs. And serendipitous collabs that yield delicious results. Here we introduce the most exciting labels right now.
Eleven producers will feature, each set to share two wines. Meet the folk behind artisan McLaren Vale crew L’Anima, launched with four climate-compatible varieties and already earning critical acclaim. Organic and lo-fi principles also guide regional neighbour Oria Riff, where layered offerings from winemaker Cooper Davis Draper are guided by his work across Australia, France and Canada. And just down the road there’s Aldinga’s Mighty Isle, specialising in desert island wines made by Guy Palmer-Brown and Tania Davey.
Matt Large spent four years as senior winemaker with Shaw + Smith while also working vintages in Barolo and Barbaresco. Now he’s all in on Prater, formerly his passion project, making wine from select parcels in Australia and Italy. European experience also guides Rob Cain, who worked three harvests in France and makes his small-batch range in the Adelaide Hills.
New Barossa will be represented by Callum Powell and his label Agricola Vintners, with Clare Valley offerings from Gertie and Phase Three sharing wines from Eden Valley. There’s also a chance to chat with producers working across multiple regions. Marcell Kustos of LVDO shapes wines from Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale grapes, while Jess DiGiorgio launched Bande Apart Wines in celebration of cool, expressive sites in South Australia and Victoria.
The future is now – and it just happens to be in your glass.
