Tasting Australia by Road - Barossa
Sat 9th May 2026 at 8:30 AM
$450
Tradition abounds in the Barossa – home to everything from gnarled old vines to a bakery whose wood oven has remained alight for decades. But there’s new energy too. It comes from stars making their mark in a region that has long celebrated craft, and now comes your chance to feel it first-hand. Guiding this full-day experience are chef Clare Falzon and viticulturalist Dylan Grigg.
Begin with a signature snack and tour at Staġuni in Marananga: a reimagined primary school where Falzon honours her Maltese heritage. Accolades abound, including Gourmet Traveller nods for best destination dining and top South Australian restaurant. Its precinct neighbours offer wares that include gin, ceramics, coffee and flowers.
Next is Gully Gardens near Angaston – among just a handful of heritage commercial orchards still operating in the Barossa. Tour this biodynamic property with next-gen owners Ellie and Owen Agnew, tasting its fresh and preserved range, before morning tea under the trees. A delicious regional collab awaits: fruit-filled Carême pastries, brews from a local coffee roaster and Scullery Made tea.
A wine tasting feels imperative in this part of the world. Join winemaker Brett Groke in the vineyard as he shares drops from his boutique label Eperosa – a range lauded for their depth and nuance.
Late lunch will unfold beside the Barossa Ranges on a historic property owned by Michael Wohlstadt, better known as The Dairyman. For more than 40 years he has produced milk and meat, advocating for the revival of mixed farming and so persuasively reminding us that bigger should not be confused with better. Falzon is set to shape the day’s menu, with wines selected by Grigg and views across the paddocks between Lyndoch and Williamstown. A further treat: time to explore the space where Wohlstadt grows oyster mushrooms, prized for their culinary and medicinal properties.
No rush. All reward. This beautifully authentic road trip beckons.
