Learn - How Wine Is Made
Sun 17th May 2026 at 12:00 PM
Come on in. This is learning at its most immersive: sessions led by top sommeliers and winemakers that cover the basics and happily explore more nuanced elements too. Modern food and drink pairing, how hops influence beer, sommelier secrets and winemaking basics are in the spotlight. Come with questions and leave inspired.
Winemaking is most certainly a science – but every special bottle proves art is there too. And it’s precisely this alchemy that can be so mysterious. Join two of Australia’s most charismatic wine personalities as they go beyond technical jargon to explain precisely how the magic happens.
Leading this conversation will be Cassandra Charlick, an award-winning wine journalist, judge, travel and food writer whose coverage appears in titles including Decanter and Halliday Magazine. Explaining wine’s nuances is all in a day’s work for this industry expert, also a noted presenter and emcee at trade and consumer events.
Here Charlick will chat with winemaker Owen Latta, who leads his family winery Eastern Peake in central Victoria together with his own negociant label Latta Vino. This 2025 Young Gun of Wine finalist learnt fast, steering his first vintage at just 15 after his father was injured at work, and has gone on to become one of Australian wine’s most interesting stars. Pinot noir and chardonnay-based wines feature at Eastern Peake, while Latta Vino offers emerging varieties and more experimental techniques.
Sip, muse and ask all the questions you like – we’re proudly putting the fun in fundamentals.
