Masterclass - Chardonnay

Sat 16th May 2026 at 1:30 PM

$200

Chardonnay is Australia’s most exciting grape. It’s a big call, but we have the wines (and winemakers) to make the case. Be there as host Cassandra Charlick explores this classic variety with winemakers Peter Dredge and Michael Downer. Twelve wines will feature in the masterclass, a mix of impressive Aussie bottles and their international counterparts.

The Hobart-based Charlick is best known for her work as a wine writer, emcee and speaker, with her coverage published in titles including Decanter, International Traveller and delicious. Also in Tasmania: Peter Dredge, who crafts wines with the Ellis family at Meadowbank and for his own label Dr Edge. Detailed, textural chardonnays are among his strengths, made with the kind of assured restraint possible to deploy after decades of experience.

Adelaide Hills label Murdoch Hill is Downer’s domain. It’s here he leads winemaking across label’s estate-grown offering and Artisan Series, with his skill as a technician evident in both classic expressions and more adventurous pursuits. Chardonnay takes pride of place at this family-owned winery, with its flagship Rocket expression taking out the Prime Minister’s trophy for champion wine at the 2024 National Wine Show of Australia.

Grenache may get a lot of the wine world limelight, but it’s chardonnay that consistently raises the bar for value and quality. Intrigued? Come on in.
