With each hiss and crack of the fire sparks rise skyward. Guitar chords draw you closer. Beyond the city a half-moon rises, its ancient rhythms old as time.
Gather on Kaurna country at Good Neighbour – heart of Tartanyangga – for an evening of fire, music and art in celebration of sacred songline Kungkarangkalpa Tjukurrpa (Seven Sisters Dreaming).
Chefs Mindy Woods, Duncan Welgemoed, Sarah Glover and Alex Crawford will be joined by South Australian winemakers Sue Bell and Pauly Vandenbergh to shape the kind of generous meal only possible here. Joining them: artist and musician George Cooley, together with fellow artists from APY Arts Centre Collective, featuring work that spans acrylic on linen, traditional carving, fibre weaving and ceramics. Meet these remarkable artists and hear their stories, with works available for purchase and the chance to join a basket weaving circle.
Woods, a proud Bundjalung woman, is among the nation’s most influential culinary figures: a chef, cookbook author, campaigner and educator. She was named a Champion of Change by the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards last year for her contribution to community through food – the first Australian to receive the honour – and offers cultural and culinary experiences with Karkalla on Country near Byron Bay.
Welgemoed and Glover, meanwhile, share the open flame as muse. Experience their craft through mains cooked over two open fires at the heart of this multi-layered meal. Adelaide diners know Welgemoed best for his magnetic Africola in the city’s east, while Glover divides her time between Sydney and the United States, specialising in al fresco feasts linked by a sense of adventure. Here she will prepare fish on logs set over the coals.
Rounding out the lineup is dessert whiz Crawford, whose Sugar Man patisserie in Adelaide’s Hutt Street specialises in artisan gelato you just have to try.
There will be paired wines from Coonawarra-based Bell and her Bellwether label, lauded for its range of classic and emerging Mediterranean options, with fellow Aboriginal winemaker Vandenberg to share stories and selections from his national brand Munda Wines.
Purpose-built bistro Good Neighbour already feels beautifully separate from urban bustle. Here, for one very special night only, it will host this remarkable homage.
